The project ‘SouthMed WiA – Towards Greater Gender Equality: Promoting the Role and Image of Women in the Southern Mediterranean Audiovisual Sector’ has recently published the “Guidelines for a balanced gender approach in audiovisual training and education”. SouthMed WiA is implemented by a consortium of European and southern Mediterranean organizations led by Interarts and is co-funded by the European Union under the Med Film regional program. During the last 2 years, it has focused its efforts on strengthening the capacities of female professionals and operators of the audiovisual sector in 7 countries of the Southern Mediterranean: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia.
The team behind the project “SouthMed WiA, Towards Greater Gender Equality: Promoting the Role and Image of Women in the Southern Mediterranean Audiovisual Sector”, has published an unprecedented handbook under the title “Gender-related Opportunities in the Audiovisual Sector”.

SIB has prioritized documentary film as the vehicle for its overall goals due to the effectiveness of documentaries to tell meaningful stories. Documentaries serve to tell the stories and reflections of personal lives and societal conditions that are rarely found in public and private mass media. Documentaries have the potential to communicate directly with people and communities who may not read or have ready access to independent political analyses and whose main source of information often comes from state-controlled news services.
